I think Sierra Burgess is a Loser is an anomaly because it’s a young adult comedy that’s not adapted from a book. That’s not necessarily what makes it bad, but I think it tries to replicate the phenomenon without really understanding the heart and soul YA Lit brings to a film. Dumplin’ and TATBILB really resonated with me in the same way a lot of really great books do.
And also? Sierra Burgess was written by a woman, but the director and most of the crew were men. As someone with a media background, I can tell you that definitely makes a difference. There are a lot of reasons it fell flat, but those ones definitely don’t help.
Didn’t you just say it wasn’t adapted from a book???
